I have always loved antiques in general, but I had never been that much for
hoarding collecting. My mother-in-law was going through some cabinets a while ago, and asked my husband if there was anything he particularly liked. He mentioned that he had always liked the green bowl that his grandmother used to serve gravy from at Sunday dinner. My mother-in-law pulled out the bowl, and a matching coffee mug, I was in love. I had heard about jadeite Fire King, but I never paid much attention to it. I was now paying attention! My vintage kitchen obsession had begun.
As you see by the picture of my kitchen corner cabinet, my collection is getting a bit out of hand. I love vintage cast iron, rolling pins, and Pyrex, but my Fire King collection is probably my favorite, maybe because it was my first, and it kind of led me to the others. I started with the classic Fire King coffee mugs, which led to my collection of Glasbake and Federal mugs.
And then I found out about Fire King china. I started with the white, and at this point I think I could almost serve 50, I have so much of it. I then moved on to the peach laurel. And then I found pink!
I couldn’t believe my luck when my husband and I were in Laurens, and we decided to stop in the Goodwill there. I found an entire box, service for 8, of Fire King Anniversary china. dinner plates, large bowls, berry bowls, teacups and saucers, a serving bowl, serving plate, cream and sugar. For $35!
I amass so much china that I am trying to make myself get rid of some of it. My way of deciding whether to keep it for myself or to send it to my antiques booth is to set the table with it and see how it makes me feel. What do you think? Does it stay or go?
